Chinese New Year Traditions and Celebrations


China’s Spring Festival is rich in tradition and customs.

It is popular for people in China to give their houses a good cleaning before the Spring Festival, which symbolizes sweeping away the bad luck of the last year and making their homes ready to receive good luck.

During the Chinese New Year period, every street, building, and house is decorated with red, as red is believed to be a lucky color: red lanterns, red couplets, red New Year pictures, Chinese knots, red window paper-cuts, and red clothes.

Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) is a time for families to be together. It has been a long-held tradition for Chinese people to return home from work or study and to enjoy a reunion dinner with their families on New Year's Eve, even if it requires traveling a long distance.

The dinner is believed to be the most important part of the festival and the most important meal of the year. Big families of several generations sit around round tables and enjoy the food and time together. Dishes with lucky meanings are fish and dumplings.
Setting off firecrackers and fireworks is a traditional festive activity. Billions of fireworks go up in China at 12 midnight and in the first minutes of Chinese New Year.

Like Christmas in the West, people exchange gifts during the Spring Festival. The most common gifts are red envelopes. Red envelopes have money in, and are given to children and old people. Red envelopes are used in the hope of giving good luck.

Lion dances and dragon dances are very popular on this day. They are performed to bring prosperity and good luck for the upcoming year or event.
