WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES Beijing, China 2022


Task 1. Match the names of the sports with their descriptions:

A) In this kind of sport, a skier races down the slope wearing skis with fixed-heel bindings. At the Olympic Games the event is traditionally dominated by Alpine countries, Austria has a commanding lead in total medals with 121 and in gold medals with 37.

B) The sport combines two winter sports disciplines. Athletes compete in both ski jumping and cross-country skiing.

C) Two teams, each consisting of six players wearing skates and protective gears, compete to score goals by sending a rubber puck into another team’s gate.

D) At an average speed of 135 km per hour, this is considered one of the fastest sports in the Olympic games. A team of athletes maneuver a sled on the track covered with snow and ice, with the winning team completing the route with the fastest time.

E) This is a discipline with a free-wheeling, extreme appeal where athletes compete by performing artistic aerial tricks. The sport consists of aerials, moguls, slopestyle, half pipe, and cross. The sport was once known as “hot- dogging”. The performers can do helicopters, somersaults, and twists in the air. Heart stopping and lots of fun.

F) This is considered the most glamorous sport of the Olympics. There are dancing, pairs, and a men and women's completion. The competitors wear beautiful costumes and can perform amazing jumps. Athletes skate on the ice performing spins and other choreographic elements to music.

G) This a combination sport. Athletes must fly very far on their skis and they have to race across the countryside on very thin sticks. Athletes ski down an artificially created ramp and takes off. The one who goes fastest and jumps farthest wins. Scoring is based on distance travelled, as well as style, including balance during the jump.
