Wales
Wales is a part of the United Kingdom. The country borders on England in the east and is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea in the west. Wales is not a very big country with a population of about three million people.
Much of Wales’s landscape is mountainous, especially in the north and central regions. The highest mountain is Snowdon which is 1,085 metres high. Mount Snowdon is the second highest mountain in Britain. Snowdon looks very peaceful and beautiful. Inland, you can find five types of deer, red foxes and the red squirrels. In the sea one can spot whales, dolphins and seals. Wales has a changeable, maritime climate and is one of the wettest countries in Europe. Welsh weather is often cloudy, wet and windy, with warm summers and mild winters.
There are two official languages in Wales – Welsh and English, both of which are taught in schools. Some TV programs are broadcast in Welsh. However, only about 20% of the populations speak Welsh.
Wales has its own interesting culture including language, customs, holidays and music. The country is represented by the symbol of the red Welsh Dragon, which is depicted on the national flag. The flag of Wales is one of the oldest in the world. Other symbols of the country are leeks and daffodils. These are usually worn on Saint David’s Day, which is celebrated on the 1st of March. Saint David is the patron saint of Wales.
Wales is often called "the land of song". The Welsh people, especially in rural areas are fond of poetry, singing folk songs and playing the harp. There are a lot of choirs in Wales. The Welsh are great storytellers. Traditional musical instruments of Wales include a harp, a fiddle, a hornpipe and other instruments.
Wales is famous for Eisteddfod It is the largest and oldest festival of Welsh culture, which is held every year in different areas of Wales. Competitions of bards and singers take place during Eisteddfod. Its members are known as druids who wear long robes. The colour of their costumes are white, blue or.
The country has its own national game. Rugby is the national game of Wales. The rules of the game are quite difficult. A team consists of fifteen players. The game is played with an egg-shaped ball. Wales also has a tradition of producing world-class boxers
