EXPENSIVE FISHING TRIP

It was a cold December morning when Billy Watson and Jack Dee finished loading up the car - a brand new Cherokee Jeep for which Billy had just paid over $ 30,000. | 1 |
At that time of year the lake is frozen and the ice is thick enough to carry the weight of the car. As they set off, Jack whistled to his dog, Rover, who jumped into the back.
Jack sat down in the front and put a small package carefully down on the seat. It was a stick of dynamite that he had managed to get hold of from the demolition company where he worked. | 2 |
After a quick stop for coffee and breakfast, they drove along the highway and arrived at the lake shortly after sunrise. Billy carefully steered the jeep onto the slippery surface, and they drove several miles across the frozen lake towards a remote spot in the centre. | 3 |
Jack took off his jacket and picked up the stick of dynamite. His heart began to beat faster and his fingers trembled as he lit the 40-second fuse. He bent his arm and launched the dynamite as far as he could across the lake, | 4 |
It was at that point that the two men suddenly saw Rover running excitedly across the ice. There was just one problem. Rover, who had been trained to collect sticks, was racing across the lake towards the dynamite! 'Rover, No! Rover, Rover, No!' screamed Jack frantically, but the dog took no notice.
Rover began to head back towards the men with the stick of dynamite in its mouth. Billy and Jack, who could see what was going to happen, decided to try to get away as the dog hurried back towards the jeep. | 5 |
Seconds later, the dynamite went off, and pieces of ice and metal were blasted into the sky. The Air Rescue helicopter arrived after dozens and dozens of callers reported a loud explosion out on the lake a few miles north-east of Marblehead. | 6 |
