READING

Task 1. Read the texts:

A
After the First World War, the clothes of the swinging 1920s shocked many people. Fashions for women became more relaxed and freer than before. Their hair became much shorter and dresses were not as long and wide as before. Their clothes became brighter and less formal, to match the new music and ‘in’ dances like the Charleston.

B
In the middle of the 18th century, some of the most fashionable rich young men in Britain copied the latest Italian fashions. They wore extravagant clothes, lots of make-up to look pale, and high wigs that were powdered and tied with ribbons.

C
Punk fashions were as aggressive as punk music, which arrived in the 1970s. Punks chose the least conventional hairstyles possible. They cut their hair in strange ways and often dyed it bright colours. They usually wore large boots, torn jeans and painted leather jackets.

D
In Europe at the end of the 18th century, women’s dresses began to get wider and wider and their hair began to get longer and longer. The widest dresses measured nearly two metres, making it difficult to move around and sit down. To make themselves prettier, some women had enormous hairstyles. These were often decorated with flowers, feathers and even fruit!

Read and put the parts of the text in the right order

A ‘Right let’s hear it.’ said the first man.
All right.’ replied the second. Jan immediately recognised the
voice of one of the men. It was Jaraslav, one of Poland's greatest
comics, who imitated famous people.

B In the end Jan exploded with laughter. Jaraslav immediately broke off
his performance and rang up the police. Jan was still laughing when the
police came to arrest him.

C Jan Tomisc's career as a burglar was not going very well.
One night, as he was walking through the streets of Warsaw,
Jan saw a large house and decided to break into it.

D Jaraslav began imitating the prime minister and Jan, who was hiding
behind the sofa, started laughing to himself. Next, Jaraslav imitated
the Bishop of Cracow. Jan started to shake with laughter and tears
were running down his face.

E He got through an unlocked window but, while he was filling
his sack with silver, he heard voices. He quickly hid behind the
sofa and a moment later two men came into the room.
