Matryoshka Dolls


Matryoshka is a Russian wooden doll with smaller dolls stacked within the bigger ones, it is considered to be a symbol of Russian folk art and culture.
Matryoshka was made 150 years ago. The first Matryoshka appeared in the late 19th century near Moscow.
The Japanese doll Fukurama was very popular in Japan. Fukurama consisted of seven other figurines nestled one another. The Fukurama figure was brought to Russia by Elizaveta Mamontova, the wife of Savva Mamontov, from her travel to the island of Honshu. At the end of that century, the craftsman Vasily Zvezdochkin and artist Sergei Malyutin created a new Russian folk art doll — Matryoshka. In April of 1900, Matryoshka was represented at the World fair in Paris, where it won the bronze medal and worldwide fame.
“Matryoshka” was one of the most popular female names in Russia of those years. This name derived from the Latin word "mater" (mother) and was given for a mother of a large family.
Matryoshka became popular in the summer of 1957 when the World Festival of Youth and Students was held in Moscow. 35 thousand participants from 131 countries came to Moscow. Most of them bought Russian Matryoshka and carried them all over the world. The main purpose of the doll is to surprise as it has several smaller dolls inside each other.
Matryoshkas show various styles and colours of clothing. Sets of Matryoshka dolls can be dedicated to the historical events, illustrate characters of fairy tales, fables and other literary works.
